Climate Change Business Journal Recognizes CIS for a Leadership Role in One of the Great Lakes Region’s Largest Urban Green Stormwater Infrastructure Programs

San Diego, Calif. (March 2025) — CIS is honored to receive the Business Achievement Award for Climate Resilience Industry Leadership in 2024 by the Climate Change Business Journal®* (CCBJ), an independent business research publication that provides strategic market intelligence to the environmental and climate change industries.

CIS was recognized for its work on the Fresh Coast Protection Partnership (FCPP), a collaboration with the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District (MMSD), which has become one of the largest urban green stormwater infrastructure programs in the Great Lakes region. FCPP is a crucial part of MMSD’s 2035 goal to capture the first half inch of rain (740 million gallons) using green stormwater infrastructure (GSI). Key highlights of FCPP include its cost-effectiveness, at $2.36 per gallon, making it the most affordable regional program; its goal of capturing nearly 11.5 million gallons of stormwater by 2025; and the use of a Goldman Sachs credit facility to fund all projects while assuming all project risks to protect taxpayer investments. The program has exceeded its goal of having 60% of GSI installations on private property, with 93% of installations on private land. Additionally, FCPP has achieved 46% participation from small, women/minority-owned businesses, surpassing its 25% goal, and has had an economic impact of $61.32 million from a $29.2 million investment.

“2024 was a year of strong growth and innovation for the climate change industry. With momentum behind the energy transition and investment in climate resilience, service and technology companies continued to make their mark in rapidly evolving new market niches. The wave of federal funding for infrastructure investment and tax credits and other incentives for clean power also provide scope for design and operational improvements, and a number of noteworthy companies took advantage of the dynamic markets with new practices and projects, and securing investment for their ambitious plans.” said Grant Ferrier, editor of Climate Change Business Journal and chair of the CCBJ Business Achievement Award selection committee.

“FCPP is a distinctive, community-driven partnership (CBP) that provides a socio-economic solution for delivering large-scale climate resiliency. Through this multi-year collaboration, MMSD is investing nearly $30 million in total development costs. As of March 2025, CIS is on track to successfully complete the program and has already exceeded  all key performance goals outlined above,” said Sanjiv Sinha, P.E., Ph.D., Chief Executive Officer of CIS.

The 2024 EBJ & CCBJ awards will be presented live and in-person at the EBJ Business Achievement Awards banquet at Environmental Industry Summit XXIII on April 2-4, 2025 in San Diego, along with Lifetime Achievement Award for career achievements by individuals.
