Environmental Business Journal Recognizes CIS for leading a community-based water infrastructure program with the Unified Government of Wyandotte County/Kansas City, Kansas (UG)
San Diego, Calif. (March 2026) — CIS is proud to announce that it has received the 2025 Business Achievement Award from the Environmental Business Journal (EBJ), an independent research publication that has delivered strategic market intelligence to the environmental industry since 1988.
“In a year marked by growth alongside volatility in the $570-billion U.S. environmental industry, several companies distinguished themselves through business model innovation, new practices, technical advancements, M&A activity, and signature projects worthy of special recognition,” said Grant Ferrier, editor of Environmental Business Journal and chair of the EBJ Business Achievement Award selection committee. “With steady demand across traditional environmental markets—such as infrastructure, air quality, remediation, water and wastewater—as well as energy transition and climate resilience, companies are reporting increasing need for environmental technology and services. Successfully navigating political change and ongoing challenges including inflation, supply chain disruptions, wage pressures, labor shortages, and evolving market conditions has become second nature to today’s resilient industry leaders.”
CIS earned recognition for launching a $150 million initiative to deliver community-based water infrastructure projects in Kansas City, Kansas. The program includes stormwater system upgrades, combined sewer separation, and green stormwater infrastructure improvements. The award highlights both the scale of the engineering effort and CIS’s ability to manage complex, multi-year municipal programs.
The initiative is being implemented through CIS’s Community-Based Partnership (CBP) model, which prioritizes workforce development, expansion of the regional contractor base, and local hiring. By focusing on businesses located in economically disadvantaged neighborhoods, the program is designed to create long-term socioeconomic benefits alongside critical infrastructure enhancements.
“This new $150 million portfolio is expected to become a cornerstone of UG’s federally mandated 25-year consent decree program, which anticipates approximately $900 million in sewer and stormwater investments. We look forward to supporting large-scale infrastructure delivery that is centered on meeting regulatory milestones while supporting local economic growth across the region.” said Sanjiv Sinha, P.E., Ph.D., Chief Executive Officer of CIS.
The 2025 EBJ awards will be presented live and in-person at the EBJ Business Achievement Awards banquet at Environmental Industry Summit XXIV on April 1-3, 2026 in San Diego, along with CCBJ Business Achievement, Lifetime Achievement and 50-Year Company anniversary awards.
