Capital Bikeshare Green Mobility Hubs Program

Washington, DC

Capital Bikeshare, operating in seven jurisdictions in and around Washington, D.C, is the second largest bikeshare system in the U.S.

Project Scope

  • Transportation and Mobility

  • Stormwater Management

  • Best Management Practices

  • Permit Compliance

  • Construction Scheduling

  • Contract Evaluation

  • Design and Construction Oversight

The Capital Bikeshare Green Mobility Hubs Program is designed to treat surface stormwater runoff using green stormwater infrastructure (GSI) facilities near the location of Capital Bikeshare Stations. The program is supported by a Clean Water Construction Grant awarded to the Low Impact Development Center by the D.C. Department of Energy and the Environment, and by a private capital match from Rainplan’s capital facility with DC Green Bank.

CIS is providing project management, design review, and construction oversight services for eighteen bike sharing stations currently under construction or in the pipeline of implementing GSI facilities. The goal is to (1) maximize the detention capacity (2) ensure the certification of each bike station retrofit to capture stormwater that will alleviate flooding in the D.C. area including underserved neighborhoods for Stormwater Retention Credits, and (3) manage and secure permit approvals.

Anticipated Results

CIS is overseeing the implementation of GSI to meet Clean Water Construction grant requirements, which includes installation of best management practices to manage stormwater runoff at approximately 18 bikeshare hubs. CIS is ensuring construction schedules and budgets are met and documented in compliance with the grant requirements.

Finally, CIS will ensure construction is completed in accordance with the construction documents, permits, and in compliance with Davis Bacon requirements, and other federal and local regulations.
